Replacement top

My boyfriend and I recently acquired a Mali Uromastyx from a friend of ours. He came with a complete setup -- 40 gallon breeder tank, vinyl slide-in top, lights (Basking, UVA and UVB.) Everything has been great, and Mr. Uro adjusted quite well. He started eating the same day we moved him. We have come to a slight hitch however. Our cat loves to sit on top of the cages which is all fine and dandy -- if only it were a metal top. Needless to say the vinyl split from the frame, and I now have a jerry rigged top held together with paperclips and duct tape. I have been keeping a light blanket and a plastic lid from a tote angled over Mr. Uro's tank to keep the cat off -- but it's getting a little ridiculous. Mr. Uro can't climb out, but I do not want my cat to get in. He doesn't try to hurt the lizard -- but he might crush him. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement METAL lid for a breeder tank? Or do you think I could use a normal aquarium lid that is just a little to big? All the pet stores around here only hold stock in 36"x13".. My tank is 36"x18". My last attempt at a pet store was fruitless -- One woman said she could order one, and her Co-Worker then said we would have to buy a whole new tank! ): If I need to buy a new tank.. I will. I love my Uro, as I do all my animals, and I will do what I need to. I just don't trust pet stores, they just want my money! Any good web site referals for products would be great!

While my latest excursion to a local PetsPlus is fresh in mind, I am still FURIOUS over what I saw. There was a Map turtle in a 55 Gal with NO basking spot and EXTREME pyramiding. When I asked the employees why it was being housed that way they said it was because it was previously tankmates with a RES. They showed me the tank that they moved the Map out of ( the RES still living in it) It was a 20 gal with about 6 inches of water, and a huge water fall decoration!! These are TWO fully grown turtles... Not to mention how territorial and aggressive a RES can be.. I was just shocked...

HENCE why I do not trust pet stores. PETCO. PetSmart, PetsPlus.. Any of them. I had to keep my boyfriend from 'rescueing' so many animals.. I will not support it. );<

I believe people have had good results in terms of customer service and quality ordering online from places like
reptilesupply.com and thereptilestore.com... however I don't usually order online so I'm not sure what websites would be best for you to start searching for the right size lid. I imagine any of the main reptile sites would have lids for the standard cage sizes.

I have been to many pet stores and get so sick to how there set ups are. Specially at wall mart! Many pet stores care about money more then the pets
Have you thought of a plexy glass specially made for your tank. You can get that at lowes. Or a mesh wire it is pretty cheap. I hope this was some help.

Glasscages.com, I totally wanted one, but it would have cost a little more than the pet store did for me (oh, and I have a totally awesome Petco near me which gives me faith in the reptile sections, they have healthy, wonderful reptiles and loads of supplies and even a reptile lover/expert to help). But I know what you mean, I've seen my share of bad ones. Anyways, link to their screens page: http://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=22

I work at a PetCo in chicago, and i am very proud of my pet store. Not all petco's in general, but my particular petco. We all own many different kinds of animals and do more research then those horrible care sheets, out petco has actually sent in corrections to the corperation for the care sheets. So, if anybody is every in chicago, stop by the petco on ashland and belmont. We actually take pride in our work and are not just looking for your money. I actually turned some people down today from buying some fire belly toads (some of the easiest animals to take care of), and we turn down countless people a week from buying our snakes. So, not all pet stores are bad, it really just depends on the group of people working at the store. But I have had my fair share of horrible pet store experiences..... somebody told me that i should have the specialty made turtle tank instead of my 55 gallon at a different petco in chicago. So your feelings are understood completely.

my local petco has prolly about a 150gallon plus tank for half a dozan 4" RES
with a basking area ABOVE the tank lid, so the tank is topped off and tons of filters
all the RES look very healthy

Hi Camaudio, any chance to see how it looks like? I'd be especially interested in knowing if this is a commercial product!
