You don't. Turtles are natural escape artists. If you leave an inch, they'll find a way out. Persistent little buggers. You just need to find a way to keep him in. You can get a screen cover and modify it to allow for a small opening to the basking area. And make sure you put something around the opening to avoid any jump attempts off of the ramp onto the screen. And put a lip around your basking area. Think of anything they might think of. You can also put some pillows around the tank in case he does escape and possibly get a container of soil/sand mixture that you can let him explore every couple days to keep his curiosity under control.
