hi, i read somewhere that even if a female RES has no male mate she still needs to lay her eggs. if this is true is it nessessary to have dirt in the tank for her to bury them?

i was going to make a tank set up with a large dirt area big enough for basking and burying eggs if she needed to. is this nessessary? cause ive seen pictures of tanks with no accual land.

You are correct about females laying eggs even when there's no male around. They do.

Here's a link with info on the subject:

I don't know anyone who makes a land area for egg laying a part of an aquarium. Mostly people provide a separate box for egg laying. Read up it on the link above and also follow the links to other sites as there's more good discussion of your question on them. You can also do a search on here on the subject of eggs and see what other people's first hand experiences have been.

ok i read the links and i still have a question. i am still thinking i will make a land area inside the tank for egg laying but how deep should i make the soil? i rea don one page it should be atleast a foot for a large turtle and on another it said that 3/4 the length of the carapace should be fine.
