Habitat - Indoor :: Need Ideas

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sat Dec 29, 2007 6:08 pm   Need Ideas

I need some help. I have 2 turtles (Turfin and Turfina). They currently reside in a 50 gallon aquarium with a basking dock. I would like a smaller tank...possibly a 20 gallon. I need some designs. Any ideas would be appreciated. :D

Thanks guys!

Demf92 -- I would not recommend getting a smaller tank unless they are hatchlings. The larger the tank, the better off your turtles are. Usually, you are buying a larger tank as they grow and get larger.

A 20 gallon is too small for two turtles of any size.
Keep the 50 gallon. Before you know it the turtles will out grow that as well- hatchlings grow 4 inches alone in the first year so that 50 gallon tank will be perfect for one turtle at the end of the year.
Hatchlings look small but they grow fast and require a lot of water, so keep the tank you have.

From your previous post: "I'm new. I also have 2 turtles who sound a lot like yours. I have a hugeeeee tank (50 gallons). And I think it's too big."

50 gal is NOT too big...my 14 yo son just got a 55 gal for Christmas for his 2" map turtle. That tank will be large enough for his turtle for life, but 2 turtles would need twice the room...especially if you have female(s) that will grow larger. Keep the tank - your turtle wouldn't like the downgrade very much, and it would be harder to keep the water clean too (less water gets polluted quicker)

You never downgrade... that would have to cause the turtles emotional damage of some sort being in a 50 gallon and then losing 30 gallons of water.... no way. If you already have the 50 gallon then keep it. If you have RES you should think about their next upgrade, they get pretty big.
