Habitat - Indoor :: Indoor Pond

I know I just posted about how Im going to buy a new tank and what not, but after looking at all the outdoor ponds, I got really jealous. And seeing as how I live in an apartment in Chicago, I wont be able to give him a real outdoor pond. So, instead im going to buy a preformed pond (probably around 100 Gallons), and make a little "deck" around it, and have a little indoor pond for my little guy. I think he would like that more than a glass aquarium anyway. Im sure his sick of trying to understand the concept of glass, and his nose has got to be sore from running into the glass all the time. Have any of you ever heard of anybody doing anything like this, or have you? Any suggestions on how to go about this will be much appreciated. Im sure this will be an ongoing project, but I think it will start sometime this next week, with buying the supplies and what not.

I know there was a post on this somewhere here. I just can't find it right now. I just googled "how to build an indoor pond" and a bunch of great resources popped up. Try that.

Yes, it has been done, and it is pretty easy, from what I hear. If you would like it so you don't have to build any platforms to support the overhangs, you could also get a RubberMaid stock tank. They are made out of the same plastic that the pre-formed ponds are made out of, but they are free standing, so you don't need a stand, or supports.

That's a common idea. A lot of people use stock tanks, I believe those might be more sturdy- I think some preformed ponds are meant to be in-ground so they are depending on the support of the soil to help them from bowing out. Either way, you can usually get one for much cheaper than a tank of corresponding size would cost.

Thank you very much. I think I kind of like the idea of building a little deck for her around the pond. Plus it will give me something productive to do during my winter break... 5 weeks of no school! exciting. I think I might go to home depot and see what they have in the pond department. ha. Ah, plus ill need a new filter. I just have a not so great "turtle" filter right now, that works well for about a day, then it needs cleaning. Any suggestions on a good filter for a pond like set up, I feel as if it would take an entire different way of going at it. Thanks again.

I have an indoor pond for my turts for the winter. I really didn't set it up because I am finishing my basement, so I just stuck it in my old fireplace. Next year I will fix it up a bit when I finish my basement. It is 60 gal and I bought it at Home depot.

I have a pond set up in my home, since I live in Pittsburgh - staying outside is not an option. I found a round almost clear vice black pond tank at a local nursery. I like it because you can see through it as well. I have it on a piece of plywood and blocks to keep it off the floor. I would make sure to put a towel etc under it if it is going to sit on a hard surface -when I was cleaning, it had stuck to the plywood and caused a crack. Also, watch your heater - Trouble broke his old one which caused it to actually start to melt the plastic since it did not turn off. I since upgraded the heater with a shatter resistant one.
