Habitat - Indoor :: New RES, how long can I keep him in this tank?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sun Oct 14, 2007 1:26 pm   New RES, how long can I keep him in this tank?

I am adopting a RES today. It is 4" long and currently is being housed in a 10G tank. I will be putting it into a 25G acrylic tank with a 24" x 20" footprint. The water temp is 75F using an Ebo-Jager 50W submersible heater. Filtration is currently a Fluval 2+ internal filter though I will add another internal filter that will be coming with the RES. This is only temporary as I am moving to Calgary in December at which point I'll upgrade to something bigger (probably a Rubbermaid stock tank).

I know the set-up is a little small but I figure it's better than what the RES is living in now. I keep my fish tanks in pristine condition and do 25-50% waterchanges every week. Will this be OK until December or do I need to upgrade sooner? Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

I don't think a couple of months will permanently damage the turtle. As long as you make sure the water is clean. You might also take him out on a weekly basis for some exercise.

When you get the new tank, get the biggest tank you can afford. Your turtle will eventually need a 100 gallon tank, if not bigger.

The plan is to get a 300G stock tank and build a plywood cabinet around it.

That'll be perfect! And you're going to do that in december? Your turt will have a ball in something that size.

There's no problem, I mean it's still a decent size tank at it's for such a short period of time. Red Eared Sliders are so adaptive and hardy, plus it'll be a double in size. Now a 300 gallon stock tank, that's HUGE!

I might only get the 150G version. The 300G would be cool though. It's around 6' long x 4' wide and 30something inches deep.
