I'm upgrading to a 100+ gallon soon and would like to make a larger basking area where Yaddle can run around a little. Can someone give me some ideas of materials etc?

Mine is for a 20gallon but you could always make a bigger version.

what's the best kind of wood to use when building an above tank basking area? i wanted to do a wood/plexiglass combo, but wondering if you have to treat the wood with anything to prevent water damage/mold growth. I'm also looking for an inexpensive wood.

Isn't pine one of the woods you aren't supposed to used with animals... as far chemical fumes and leeching. Or is that just cedar?

dghenson7445 - I'm guessing you're referring to the photo that Spotsmama posted of my tank?

My dad made the box for me, but it was a pretty simple concept. Basically I just measured around the outside of my tank, and that's the size of the inside dimensions of the box. So the box slips completely over the tank, and there are little chunks of wood nailed about an inch up in each corner, to hold it at the right height. There's also a notch cut out from the bottom to feed the cords through.

The hard part I think would be putting the plexiglass in the front. Probably an easier way of doing it would be to cut 4 strips of wood to form the front, then just screw or glue the plexi onto the back of the window. In mine the plexi is encased in the front, and I honestly have no idea how my dad did that.

The basking platform itself is just a ceramic tile that was cut to fit on the inner lip of the tank, so it just rests there.

Thanks Starchick, I also saw the discussion where you were painting the box. It is great I am going to figure out one for mine. This is probably the best out of tank basking area I have seen yet.
