so, i finally got my new heater in the mail... fully submersible this time (but it's glass...i know i'm cheap i couldn't afford the visitherm which was $35) problem is, they didn't send the suction cups... I was wondering if it would be ok for the glass heater to just rest on the bottom of the glass tank....or maybe it would even float...i just thought of that, i haven't even tried yet since they didn't send the suction cups...i'm waiting on the company to call me back about sending the cups but want to install it now...any advice??

If it sinks to the bottom i guess its fine, aslong as there isnt any abstruction that can hit it and cause it to break.

Umm, I could just see the turtles now kicking around the bottom of the tank maybe taking a couple of swings at the heater and banging it against the glass bottom of the tank and *crash!!* ... broken glass everywhere and a very dangerous electrical situation. I'd wait for the suction cups if I were you.

If it floats, that would be a problem. Say half the heater is out of the water, and half is, then the heater turns on, you're turtle could touch it get, burned, bump the other half of the heater and cause it to shatter, not sure what would happen to the electricity.

Now, if it sinks, that would be a little more safe, but I still wouldn't want my turtle to freely move the heater, the turtle could push it into the aquarium's glass or rocks and cause it to shatter.

Definitely call the company tomorrow during business hours and tell them to send you suction cups, they should do it for free.

You can get the company to send you suction cups, but if you buy a heater guard, it will come with suction cups and you'd have protection against breakage. What brand of heater did you buy? Tronic makes heater guards and they will fit on some different brands (I've used them on Ebo-Jagers, Stealths and Hydors). You would have to measure the length of yours to determine if the guard is long enough to fit your heater. You can get heater guards at www.bigalsonline.com

Thanks everyone, the company called me back today and said they would ship out the suction cups, I should recieve them in 3-4 weeks...ugh

If you ordered from a petco or petsmart site, you should be able to go into their store to exchange it right away. $35 is pretty steep for any heater, including the Stealth heater. I've had a glass heater unsecured in a glass tank, but that was my Ebo Jager and they are made of tempered Pyrex or something like that.

I've heard of people making their own heater guards out of PVC with some holes drilled into it.
