Uhh, i dont think its gunna be harmfull
But the clenliness of your water will be affected
Since your cutting down the filter time in half
Your basicly cutting down the water quality in half

Why do you want to do it?

Yes,there is harm. Turning off the filter means cutting off oxygen supply for the beneficial bacteria, and they'll die. If you don't have any Beneficial bacteria in your tank, the ammonia and nitrites will pile up.

The filter helps keep the water circulated and that helps keep the water temps even. Plus, it can't hurt for the filter to do some cleaning at night.

Good question. Keeping the filter going is important for the beneficial bacteria. Without oxygen, you'll kill them off.

Let me guess...Do you have filter that returns the water to the tank as a waterfall and is noisy? If you do, and if it's an AquaClear, you can eliminate much of the noise by siliconing a piece of plexiglass to the lip and having the plexiglass meet the water so that the water entering the tank doesn't make a splashing sound.

Well the noise from the filter is bothersome. But I just wanted to know what the harmful aspects of shutting it off overnight would be. I don't think I I'd do it.

If the noise bothers you then just stick your mp3 player on at night or get some ear plugs , hope that helped :) .
