Habitat - Indoor :: Just got an new tank, have a couple of questions

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sat Jul 21, 2007 11:08 pm   Just got an new tank, have a couple of questions

alright, i got a new 29 gallon tank, just wondering, is 1 100watt heater enough to keep the water warm? It is the kind for fish, so it sits on top of the tank, and a long stick sticks into the water to heat it. The problem is that I don't want to fill up the tank completely with water, (or the turtle may be able to escape), so the heater is only partially submereged by water. Is this sufficient? And also, is it dangerous? Can I cause a fire or something by not keeping the heater completely submerged??

lmk, thanks

Also, the tank came with a filter, it is just a regular fish tank filter, with a hose sticking down like the heater, and it sucks up water. Is this a sufficent filter?

please help!
Thanks for any help in advance :)

i have the same kind of heater, it should have a suction cup, and if the wire is long on your, just drag it all the way down to the water

Is any of the heater that's above the water line hot? Or are all the hot parts under water?

Your filter should be on non stop since it provides oxygen for the beneficial bacteria which eats the ammonia

Any way to get that last half inch of heater under water? If your turtle touches it, it may burn him. Also, if it's meant to be all under water, it may break if it's exposed to air and heats up.

And Tenodera's right about the filter. It's supposed to run day and night. Is your filter loud because of water splashing? If so, there may be a way to reposition it so it's quieter.

also, it seems like the wate falling out of the filter just pushes away all the other water int he tank, so none of the other water gets filtered! is this a problem?

He's going to show signs of stress until he gets used to his new surroundings. Be patient.
What type of filter/heater do you have exactly (make, model #)?

alright, I have a Thermo 100 watt aquarium heater, doesnt have exact model number.

I have a marineland pf0125e filter. the filter looks like one of these filters (probably the 125 one):

That filter should be adequate.....for now. When you upgrade to a larger tank you'll need a larger filter.
The heater is a long, glass cylinder with the temp control at one end, correct? If so it is probably fully submersible, but too long to stand up straight in the 29 gal. tank. Just set it at an angle and just allow the temp. control to stick out of the water. Set it for about 76F. You do have a thermometer, to measure water temps, yes?

yes, I have a thermometer, but I don't think the thermometer is fully submersible, it was made with a hook so it could hang on the edge of the tank. Also, it only has 1 suction cup, and it IS short enough to be completely sumerged inthe tank.

It is fine for now though, it heat the water up to 80 degrees with the basking lamp on, so i turned it down a little jsut a few minutes ago
thanks for all the help
