Habitat - Indoor :: Best Filter Recommendations?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Wed Jun 25, 2014 10:51 am   Re: Best Filter Recommendations?

If I knew fluval made the 06 line of filters I would have never bought the Rena. I have to unplug it every few days to let the air out and half the time it won't run when I plug it back in? So I take the top off remove the impeller put it back in and then it will run again. That's just a pain in the butt.

Well right now my 406 is giving me grief - the "whisper quiet" function isn't working too well. Still the folks at Fluval seem to be trying to help me as best as possible.

Their customer service seems pretty good. Is it just noisy? It does have a three year warranty.

Oh, she's 4 inches btw

My daughters have 2 RES (shell lengths about 4" and 3") in 8-9 gallons of water in a 20-gallon tank (for which I do all the maintenance, naturally lol) and I've gotten to a point where the AquaClear 30 it came with just isn't getting the job done anymore. I've pretty much settled on a cannister filter, and have a couple questions if you don't mind:

1) Is there such a thing as too many GPH? That is, would a filter doing over 200 GPH be too much current in a tank this size? It can only be filled to about 9 gallons because on one of the short sides, the tank only has a half-high wall (that's where I hang the AquaClear).

2) I'm considering either a Sunsun 402-B (264 GPH, rated up to 75 gallons) or a Sunsun 302 (370 GPH, rated up to 100 gallons). Are Sunsun any good, and is either of those too much for this tank? I'm looking ahead to the day when the turtles need a bigger tank and would prefer to get a filter with that tank in mind, rather than something smaller, if a filter that big is OK with a tank this size.

Thank you very much!

You wanted to know the best filter right. Well for the money its the FX6. 4" turtle 75 gallon tank. If it was me I would buy the FX6. If you buy a bigger tank at least you won't have to buy a new filter....

Ok, but if I buy this filter, will it last me a really long time? It is a lot of money...

I had a Fluval 304 way back... I'm not a big fan of that series.

@Therobbierabbit - A standard 90 gallon is just 4" taller than a 75 gallon. A 100 gallon is about 12" longer than a 75 gallon.

@bluegill_guy - Over filtering a small tank likely won't help. Do you know the genders of the turtles yet? If so, then you can plan accordingly now.

I can't say how long any filter will last. I have had mine going on 2 years. If I ever buy another filter it will be an FX6.

It seems to only be noisy. The water inside Sheldon's tank was so clear and clean you'd have thought he was swimming on glass. I have no complaints so far about the performance only that it's not as quiet as advertised. I just want to make sure it isn't going to harm the filter in the long run.

You can't over filter a tank so to speak but I wouldn't use a filter that large in that small of a tank. Are sunsun filters good? Depends on who you ask. Personally I wouldn't buy one. In the case of filters you get what you pay for.

I know its probably not something you want to do " because of the trouble you have had" but you could take it back and exchange it and see if they all make that noise. My FX is real quite but my Rena is noisy. Just something I live with.

I can live with it. It is still quieter than the previous filter. Just an issue I want to make sure doesn't cause me to run out and buy a new one in two months. ;)

That's why I'm still here. So many people with knowledge. I knew little about turtle keeping until two years ago. I had so many questions and thanks to all the wonderful people here I now have 4 happy turtles.
