I've never heard of the penny thing.I wouldn't do it,because they're can be dirt and bacteria all over it.Like geekyturtle said most of the penny is zinc.

wow i didn't expect this many responces!
i'd rather not try building something that isn't tested. if animals weren't involved, perhaps i'd feel different. i'll try that liquid stuffs. i can just put a couple of drops in there?
it seems the green has cleared up a bit. it's not neon, it's more green tint. i wonder why that is. less light maybe?

Light is definitely a contributing factor and maybe the tank is starting to stabilize. I'm not a big fan of chemical algaecides, but good luck!

why is that, steve? (the algaecide thing)
will it kill all the algae? cuz i still need something for the pleco/snails to munch on.
want what's best for the dwellers of the tank.

I'm just not a fan of chemicals. I haven't heard of any negative side effects (unlike silicone containing chemicals) but it does work for those who have tried it. I think AlgaeFix is the popular one, instructions do say Do not use with crustaceans, including crabs, shrimp, and freshwater lobsters. I've suggested before trying to use it without the turtle and friends in the tank and before a water change. Let it run through the tank and filter then clean everything out.

yeeeeeeeeeeah.... don't want to hurt the ghost shrimp. this new one's got quite a bit of personality.

OT: i do also have a question regarding a habit that my pleco has... but i have no idea where to post it!
