Habitat - Indoor :: uvb lamp question

I don't know anything about box turtle hibernation, but I think if you keep the lights on 12 to 14 hours a day and the temperatures steady they would think it's summer all the time and not try to hibernate. If your worried about too much UVB, I think the 14 inch distance you have is safe. Also make sure the light is only over one end of the enclosure while the other end is shaded. Keep the food and water in the shaded end so that will give him some time away from the "sun".

Also, have a place for them to hide at each end. I put the log on the warm side and a flower pot (turned on it's side, half buried) on the cool side.

Every winter my boxies (all my herps actually) slow down a bit even tho the temps are steady. They seem to have a body clock for seasonal changes even if they live indoors.
