Habitat - Indoor :: New Journey

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Thu Jun 05, 2014 12:50 pm   Re: New Journey

I think I'd rather be safe than sorry.

This morning when I fed the fish, he chased after their food.
And when I fed him, he was being so cute! He chased after it from the output from the filter.

The algae has gone down a lot, but I've been scrubbing it off the tank twice a day.

Here's the things I just ordered for him that should come in Saturday

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A8RI8TK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VJ3EP2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i05?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009Q0GGP8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i09?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OVDPJQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i10?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009KL9MV8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i11?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got two of the thermometers, four of the filter two pack things, one of the odor reducing pads, one of the deep dome lamp since I already have one, one of the lightbulbs, and one of the LED lights for the plants.

And I'm not entirely sure when we're going to build the ATBA, it might be another week.
BUt, I did see him basking this morning

Just my 2 cent to save $ in the long run, you should use sponges and purigen instead of those replacement packs. Over time the cost will add up. Normally you dont need to throw them out and replace with new until it falls apart but they put carbon in all the filter packs and if not replaced over time it'll have reverse affect.
Sponges you dont need to replace just take out rinse off and replace. Purigen can be renew by taking out after it's exhausted and add bleach, rinse, let dry and reuse.

Yeah I didn't plan on replacing the sponges, just the other side of the filter. I got 8 of those things for pretty cheap off of amazon, i'm sure they're a lot more expensive at the store. And since we have PRime, they come two days later. The filter he has now is just something to use for a while until I can afford a really good canister filter.

I agree with n3hihz... use Purigen. Instead of the Odor Reducing Pad (which is mostly carbon) and the Carbon bag, buy a large container of carbon and a couple of media bags. I can't stand companies that make these turtle specific equipment cause they want you buy their other junk :(

Also, don't trust cheap digital thermometers... they are wildly inaccurate. Always keep another type as a backup. For instance, I use the sticky LCD thermometers and a Temp Gun.

@n3hihz - don't let your Purigen dry! If you cycle your bags like I do, keep the freshly regenerated set in clean water in a bag in the refrigerator.

I'll look at carbon and purigen when I get my next paycheck.

And I have one of those stick on thermometers for the right side of the tank but I don't trust it, so I'm getting more different brands and types.

I think I'm going to move the live plants out and grow them in a separate tank, well, a few of them, maybe 5-6. Nemo has taken a liking to plants now. :)
But I don't want him to eat all of them.

Edit:: Could you maybe link me to what I'm looking for Purigen and Carbon wise on amazon? Thank you.

This is pre-bagged Purigen - http://www.amazon.com/Seachem-Purigen-1 ... B000N30O4G
This is the bulk carbon I use - http://www.amazon.com/Marineland-PA0373 ... B0002566WY
But there are lot of other places that sell bulk carbon and at different sizes. You will need a couple of bags for those.

Hmm what do you know. Why did I think to let it dry. =\ guess I need to do an overhaul of all my purigen just in case.
Oh wells. One of the reason I like aquaria or viviria because things go wrong. Otherwise it's super boring lol.

Thanks for the tip. I really need to read the instructions better.

If it's still turning brown, then it's still doing the job. I don't think they mention this on the package, it's from what I read on their support forums.

So, after being up all night thanks to hot weather and a hamster chewing on the bars of her cage, I think I'm going to attempt the ATBA today out of items that we have.

Okay, I've decided. Today's morning task, find something to make new ATBA with. His new light is coming in today so I can have it up and running by then :).

Also, I'm going to make a schedule of when to feed all animals/fish and when to do 25/50/75/100% water changes.

Today, we went out and got five albino cory catfish.
These things are only about half a inch long!
MY Danio's are unhappy about them being in thre but I think once everyone calms down they'll help a lot.

I haven't seen any more algae growing on the glass since yesterday ad the water is getting clear

I'm not sure if it was brought up, but is your tank near a window? Direct and indirect sunlight could cause a lot of algae problems.

It isn't in front of one, but it is in a room that has a window. The blinds are never open though, and the sun doesn't come in through it unless it's early morning.
