Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sat Dec 01, 2012 11:55 pm   Should I buy it?

so i was searching craigslist and i found this 180 gallon tank. its custom built and looks real nice but it doesn't hold water at the moment. I know what your thinking, stay away!!! but it needs to be resealed there are no cracks of any kind. It doesnt have any molding but thats easily fixed correct? what i want to know, is it worth picking up for $80 maybe less if i haggle? resealing i dont find to be a super difficult task but maybe im wrong. Little help guys?

I'd avoid it unless it's a hell of a deal. If the tank has been de-rimmed and/or missing the top bracing it may not be safe to fill with water. 180 gallons is a lot of water to end up in your house.

Tough to give online advice about this one. Resealing could be a chore, depending on the severity if the leaks. If it's bad as needing to be taken apart, then I would avoid it.

He sent me pictures. Again, he is only asking $80. Is this workable or more likely a disaster? He did stress it should be utilized for a reptile so hes not trying to pass it off as a working aquarium, he said that he didn't believe it was worth investing time to get it in working order again. What do ya think?

Decided not to buy it, as resealing the hex shape might be more of a pain than a reward. Ill just have to keep browsing craigslist for the diamond in the rough

I bought my 250 gallon tank on ebay after months of stalking for $400. That to me was a steal.

yeah I agree thats a good deal, but im looking for more of a dollar per gallon deal. most people ive come across are selling developed aquariums for hundreds and thousands but realistically, no one wants your already established aquarium. what fun is that? im just going to be patient, i don't want anything less than 150. I just acquired a used fx5 for 150 and its missing the intake and i thought that was a pretty good bargain.

Update: I quickly got over my woes of the 180 and now am about to go pick up a 135 for $50. Guys son lost interest in it and it has been sitting in his garage. He originally wanted 75 but I offered 50 and he agreed! why settle when you can haggle right? Should have it in my possession within a few hours. Boy is this going to be a nice project. BTW, i was searching ebay and i found a guy who creates stands and canopies and sells his designs. They look beautiful and if you like DIY projects id check him out. He only charges like $15 for the plans and his reviews are all more than impressed with the outcomes. I just emailed him asking if he'd be willing to design one with an extended canopy that incorporates an ATBA/cabinet. Ill let you know what he says and post my design if he agrees.

Wow, great deal if you get it! Usually past the 100 gallon mark, it's hard to get it for $1 per gallon.

You can always use a free photo hosting service like photobucket then link them with the [img] forum tags.

Good job finding the large tank for $50. We're looking forward to seeing your build progress.

Thanks for the advice with the photos, not very savvy with forum tricks even though I belong to a few lol. And yeah i got the tank last night with my neighbor that thing was heavy  . And its technically a 135 gallon with dimensions of 72x24x18. Once i get finished with school ill start a build thread but now my goal is to graduate, on time! Student teaching is going to kill me and I play ball for my college too so won't have much time at all to work on this so look for me close to the end of spring  heres the tank: Image

How are the seals? It looks like they've resealed it before.
