Habitat - Indoor :: Basking area.... HELP

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

OK so my RES garey needs a good basking spot. The guy at the pet shop told me its "not that important" but i have read otherwise and know that it is important.

So I went and bought $70 worth of rocks at the store and realized after they couldnt be returned it was a bad idea. I stacked them up to the top for a good basking platform but they take up probably 2/5 of his swimming area in his 50 gal tank.

So what I want to do is build an out of tank basking box he can climb up to and not escape from.(Like some shown in the tank galleries on this website) If anyone can give me some tips on how to attach this box (since you cant put screws through glass) or how to make one efficiently that would be great!
My friend gave me this turtle about 2 weeks ago and I am still learning about him. He is about 2 years old and probably hasnt basked good since he was maybe 6 months old and could fit onto those little basking floaters. I will get pics up soon if that will help.

Thanks!

I think usually they are made to rest on the rim of the tank like a tank hood.
