I would really like to build an above tank basking area, i know i need a textured ramp and untreated wood, any other helpful suggestions? also what other materials could it be made of? Do i need to attach it somehow to the top of the tank or just place it on top?

no. you need to make sure it cant fall off. what i did with my old tank. i made the sides lower than the floor. you know what i mean?
