Today we are going out to get supplies to give my turts a turtle paradise! I was hoping on having an area where Daytona could some day lay eggs (hope not). I don’t always want to be worrying about is I thinking dirt however I thought her coming on and off will quickly make the tank dirty. I came to a solution to have sand and also have sand at the bottom of my tank so if any come in the tank it will mix with the bottom. Is sand good laying eggs? Is it ok for the bottom of a tank?

Sand is good for laying eggs I believe but I think they only lay eggs outside of water and in substrate that is deep enough for them to bury in. I have seen someone successfully try sand on the bottom of the tank for appearance purposes I believe, but it usually just stirs up and dirtys the tank up.

Sand in the bottom of a tank is very difficult to keep clean. Most of the turtle people avoid it.

I think Hoooneylynn has some horror stories to tell when she tried using sand in her tank. Personally, I wouldn't try it since any sand that is fine enough to not be a danger to the turtles will most likely be easily stirred up by the turtle's movements and make the water cloudy.

You are also right about having any kind of dirt/sand nesting area making the tank water dirty. You may want to make a separate nesting container that can be attached to the main turtle enclosure only when needed. You could incorporate some kind of shallow water tray between the nesting container and the main enclosure so the turtles can wipe their feet before going back in the water.

I can't wait to see your finished project! Sounds like fun!
