Alright I have 150 Gallon tank.

It is filled up 75% so it is probably 100 Gallons of water in the aquarium.

I cant my water to stay clear and I have used the Rena XP3 and because the tank is only 75% filled it wont filter cause it can't prime properly. I would like to hear what people have for suggestions for a filter that will keep my water clear and clean. ALso I have a problem with algae my tank always turns cloudy and green.

Is there a reason that you don't fill it up more? I love my xp3, but I have enough water that priming isn't an issue. In fact, I can take my water level fairly low and not have any problems. Is the intake tube not reaching? I know that extenders can be purchased for those, although I'm not sure where.

For extra cleaning power you could also add a second filter.

As for algae, do you have you tank next to a window? That and overall dirtiness can lead to more algae growth. It isn't harmful, but unsightly. I let mine grow and just clean it every so often so that it doesn't get out of control.

Is your tank and the filter on the floor? Idealy the filter will be below the tank. I'm with Missi - I can have a pretty low water level and still have it work properly.

I've got a 100 gallon tank and an XP3. I keep the tank about 2/3 full of water. The top of the filter has to be AT LEAST 24 " below the top level of the water for the gravity powered primer to work.

The only time I had trouble with the primer not working was when I interrupted the power accidently as I was trying to start the filter and allowed air to get into the intake tube. It was easy to fix. I went through the same steps that I went through the first time I ran the filter: I emptied the filter of all water, re-attached the Quick Release Top (but didn't push the lever down), removed the cap from the top of the intake tube, put the little funnel in it and filled the tube with water, took out the funnel and put the cap back on the intake tube, pushed down the lever and waited for about two minutes for the filter to fill with water. Then I plugged in the filter and - magically! - it began working perfectly and has worked ever since.

The filter has kept my water quite clear so far except when the tank had new tank syndrom. The cloudiness then lasted about a week. I understand algae is caused by light plus "nutrients" in the water, not really related to the type of filter you use.
