A breeze! I rinse the foam pads, usually spraying them with the hose gets all the stuff out of them, and rinse my bio media with some tank water. Put it all back together, let it fill with water, and turn it on! Takes all of 5-10 minutes.
It's a little more complex than just throwing a new carbon cartridge in, but it is by no mean tough. I think if you go that route you are going to love it.
