I think I read on here somewhere that you can use pool filter sand on the bottom of tank. Is this ok. Are there any differences between that and play sand?

Yes you can use sand in your tank. Play sand is wtather course compared to fish tank sand. Pool filter sand is also fine sand. Any of them will work fine. The thing about fish tank sand is it comes in many colors.

I've had pool filter sand for nearly three years.

Compared to play sand, pool filter sand has a much more even grain size. Also, play sand will have other types of rock besides Quartz sand mixed in with it. I don't think that's a bad thing, and can actually make for a more interesting substrate.

There's less rinsing needed before use with pool filter sand, but you are still going to want to do lots of rinsing.
