Hi all!

How much of an expense do you see from the electricity to run your reptile setups? My fiance and I are trying to determine whether our high utility costs/usage are the result of our reptiles or if something is wrong! Our meter is next to our neighbor's and according to the meters we're using literally ten times as much power as her. We have five full reptile setups - so two MVBs, five regular incandescents running much of the day, two submersible heaters, two filters, two misters and a heat mat. Would any of you be able to comment on what you consider a typical electric cost for this many setups?

It's hard to say without the watts of your lights etc but you can use the calculator from marine depot

I'll try to take some measurements when I can.

Neat link to the calculator. I have 2 planted tropical tanks and my turtle tank, so with all the lighting, heaters, and filters I got about $60-$70 per month which sounds about right according to the bills I get here in Japan.

I would say something is wrong if you are using 10 times the normal amount of power, but without knowing how much power your neighbor uses there is no way to base your usage off of theirs.
I used to have an asian water monitor and his cage was heated with 15 50 watt bulbs that stayed on 24/7 and my power bill was not that bad.I also run a heater in my reptile room all winter along with all the heat tape on my snake cages.
