what are some common popular filter brands to go with. i get paid tomorrow and need to get a new filter. i've heard of fluval and zoomed but just the name, no "models" or anything like that. any help would be awesome.

How big is the tank? The Fluval FX5 is a good choice. I started out with a Fluval 405, should have just gone for the FX5 in the beginning. I'm sure Veipa will be along shortly with more detailed answers for you :)

Check the main filter thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=30145

Just a rough suggestion... 40-75 gallons use an XP3, 75+ gallons use an FX5.

The XP3 going price is a round $120-130

You find a cheaper one (possibly used) on ebay or craigslist. Oh, ebay also has knock-off canisters for half the price if you're willing to try them.

No, I think you guys have this one covered. You hit the nail on the head... cheaper to go big the first time.
