So I'm going to start buying some things for the new tank. The tank is 125 gallons. I currently have an Eheim Jager (thanks Veipa Cray) in my 10 gallon. I want the same brand for my 125 gallon. I was basically reading to try to find out what wattage I need. What I was reading was saying I'd need 400 watts. I couldn't find a 400 watt Eheim Jager, so I went to their website to see if they even made one. Once going to their website and looking at their chart, it appears I would need 100 watt heater. http://www.eheim.de/eheim/inhalte/index ... 24552_ehen Is that right? It just seems weird that if I look at one thing it says 400 watts and something else says 100 watts.

Get the 300 watt eheim jager. If that's not enough wattage to get your water to the temp you want it, add a second heater on the other side of the aquarium (or use the 300 on one side and the one you currently have on the other).

The heater manufacturers recommendations are silly. The wattage you need depends on how many degrees you need to raise the water temperature above room temperature. There might be an exact science to it, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out. 3-5 watts per gallon is the rule of thumb.

FYI 300watts is the largest eheim jager makes. Other brands come in higher wattages... (stick with the eheim unless you feel like spending a ton of $).

You really cannot have too much wattage in heaters. Once they get to the desired temperature they shut off.
As far as power consumption.... a 300watt heater and a 100 watt heater will cost the same. The 100watt heater will have to be on 3x as long to put out the same amount of heat. The 300 watt heater will cost 3x more to run while it's on but will only run for 1/3rd the time. The cost to run them is a wash.
The eheim jager heaters only differ by a dollar or two in cost between the models so get the biggest one.
