Can anyone please tell me whether the cover over Josh's setup (the black one) is a standard aquarium top but smaller in length or a special lamp or anything else?

It appears to be a standard one that's on a smaller tank. You don't need any lighting over the water, just your UVA/UVB over the basking area.

I was just thinking wouldn't it be better if the water was brighter instead of pure darkness

What about just some ambient lighting? Maybe some LED rope lights near the tank?
