I'd ditch the ammonia remover in favor of some bio media. Seachem matrix or eheim substrat pro both have relatively small size and should be able to fit into that filter. You'll need a 99 cent media bag to put your bio media in.

Yeah petsmart has media bags and the eheim bio media. They dont carry the seachem bio media even though they stock other seachem medias like purigen.

i saw the purigen media online. it says it polishes the water to make it clear and removes nitrogenous organic waste. isn't this the same as matrix?

Matrix is their bio media (optimal media for creating beneficial bacteria colonies), Purigen is chemical media, it absorbs pollutants in the water.

Seachem Matrix - Bio Media - what you want to add
Seachem MatrixCarbon - Chemical Media IE activated carbon
Seachem Purigen - Synthetic resin beads that work almost the same as activated carbon, but this product can be cleaned and used over and over.

Why Seachem named them Matrix and MatrixCarbon, who knows. It's confusing. Seachem makes some great stuff but many of their products overlap each other's features. Having similar names also adds to the confusion.
