Hi, I bought some sand for my turtles, but they are kinda like the basic kind of play sand for kids, the normal ground colored ones. The grains in the sands are pretty big, the biggest are about the size of small gravels. I'm about to change my aquarium, so I might buy new sand. I saw the play sand from Crayola which are colored. I was wondering if I can buy anything similar in Montreal if anyone lives in Montreal. Pet stores sells their sand a lot more expensive, around 20-25$ for a small bag (would take like 5-6 bags to fill up the aquarium).

So to sum up everything, I would like to find nice looking and small grain play sand that are available in Montreal if anyone lives nearby... Or is it a good idea to buy from internet?

i just added sand to my aquarium. it was 3$ for 50lbs at homedepot. i ran it through a strainer to get all the larger pieces out and than washed it really well. a large portion of the play sand is clay so when all they was washed out i assume i had about 20-30lbs of sand. but for 3$ i cant complain

Get silica based sand like play or pool filter sand. I think it's a good precaution to avoid dyed sand.

Like everyone else said, big home improvement center. 3 places you can find sand...

1. Where they sell bagged concrete, you can find quicrete bagged sand. $4 for 50 lbs
2. In the outdoor landscape area they will have other bags of playsand $4 or 5 for 30 lbs
3. Sometimes outdoor landscape area, sometimes hidden in the store.... pool filter sand. $6 for 50 lbs.

Pool filter sand if you can find a color you like is the best. It's generally free of any pebbles. Rinse it and use.
The other bagged sands need to be rinsed a little more thoroughly than the pool filter sand. They also may have some small pebbles so run this sand through a cheap colander or one of those reptile mesh scooper things to trap the pebbles.
