Just to add a though: If you haven't tried that Seachem Purigen stuff for removing the tannins from water, you have to give it a shot! I bought 3 good sized pieces of Mopani wood, soaked them for a month, boiled them a few times and they still turned my aquarium water slightly brown. Added the Purigen and BAM! Perfectly clear water from then on!

I've been talking up Purigen for some time now on this forum. Glad to hear others are using and liking it.

And the best part about Purigen, you can clean it and reuse it.

VeipaCray, I wonder if you could answer a question about purigen... I read that if you use certain water conditioners/dechlorinators can make it impossible to recharge it. Do you know anything about that? I haven't had to recharge it yet...

All I know is from the purigen support FAQ. It mentions slime coat but nothing on conditioners

Or send seachem support an email. They're very friendly and helpful. If you do, please update us a to their response.

Purigen is a synthetic replacement for activated carbon. It's relatively inexpensive and you can clean it and re-use it unlike carbon (seachem calls this regeration)

so basically it would mean i would just need to like hose off the mopani wood and maybe boil it and the purigen would take care of the rest?

The purigen will remove dissolved solids from the water. In this case your dissolved solids are tannins from the wood. So yes, the purigen does keep your water clear. IF there are a LOT of tannins, you may have to clean the purigen more frequently than normal but that's still better than taking a pound of carbon and putting it in the trash can and replacing it.
