i brought the temp down a bit slowly slowly slowly throughout the day hes doing fine.. the only thing.. my heaters turns off and on.. is that normal?

Yes a heater should turn off and on, if it would stay on the whole time then it would be warming the water the whole time and would make the water temp continue to rise.

When you check your water temp in a large tank you might want to check it in a few spots. You may notice a local hot zone near the lighting or the heater itself and cooler temperatures farther away. I was having a problem with this when I had my heater on the same side as my basking lights. I've since split them to opposite ends of the tank and the water throughout is much more even in temp.
