Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

My friend could no longer keep him, so I've got him now. We got him last night, and he is in a 50 gallon tank right now. We only have a 30 gallon filter though and it's not doing much. The heater also doesn't seem to be very effecitive. I was wondering what would be the best filter and heater for his tank. His name is Tut, and he is only three, and I want to keep him alive and well for a while. Please, someone with some good advice. (Also, funding is a little short, so not super expensive filter and heater if that's possible)

reading through the main site should answer a lot of your questions. but you have a filter that the gph is at least 5 times the amount of the tank. but you should rly buy the biggest filter you can so that when you need to upgrade tanks you wont need to buy another filter. a rena xp3 or a fluval 405 would be great. and as for a heater you will want a 200watt heater.

I think the XP3 would be good for 50 gallons. For heaters, Visitherm Stealth and Ebo Jagers are very good. I'd also pick up a couple of thermometers (I personally like to keep a sticker type thermometer and a temp gun). How is the lighting and basking setup?

For basking until we can afford to do a big shop for some new stuff for him we have set up a pile of rocks and put a big flat one on top which is partially in the water so he can climb up easier. We have a desk lamp positioned directly on the basking area, he seems to enjoy it unless he catches you watching him. Then he jumps in the water and swims around.

I like the Fluval 405 and Aquean (sp?) 200 watt heater... but there's nothing cheap about this stuff. For keeping prices down, maybe try craigslist or eBay... and I'd worry about GPH more than brand name if price is a concern.

yes you can find some great deals on filters and heaters on craigslist. type in aquarium then fish and keep going. also find the yard sales on craigslist that has these items also and just send an email ahead of time to see if they have what you are looking for. look for the good deals and be patient. you can usually get everything you need in one trip.

good luck
