Habitat - Indoor :: non electric diy filter prototype

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

anyone think this will work? or do i have to make another bend up and down in the intake hoses. totally not possible?

*oh and btw, i just sold my 55 gall and upgraded to a 72 gallon bowed black tank w/cabinet and bought a deep dome light holder and have the self ballast mercury vapor bulb, forgot the brand. can post pics but looks very basic for my 2 baby RES's

so i'm thinking to upgrade my filtering system now, and thats how i came about this design. i was kinda searching the net, and put some of my own ideas into it.

tinkering around in ms paint, not the prettiest for sure.

(would need to be mounted above tank)

Looks like a good design. I only have one question: how are you going to move the
water from the tank into the filter?

If you put the filter under the tank, gravity will pull the water into the filter, but you
need to push the water back into the tank. It's easier to do this with a sealed
filter.

If the filter is on top of the tank, you need to move the water somehow into the
filter. You can either pull water using out-of-water pump or push water using
underwater pump.

As far as I know, perpetual machine does not exist. The energy is transformed
somewhere, even very very little, that causes the machine to stop eventually.

Forgot to add: are you sure water will flow through the bioballs?

I think once the bioball container fills up, water will flow on top and out into the
drain holes. The water in the bioball container won't move much, giving no effect
on biofiltration.

IMHO, a good filter should let water flow through all filtrations without the chance
of "escaping".

this would have to be mounted on top of the tank, and if manually started from where the caps are, use a vacuum, then put the cap on, it would run through and drip out the sides back into the tank. i guess i may revisit the bioball design. would u think it would keep flowing at least if started with a vacuum? or it would die down?

You get points for thinking and trying... but Kemul is right. It won't work.

Under no circumstances can you start water flowing, and have it continue to flow without mechanical assistance. That would be prepetual motion and that is not possible. You'll need a pump.

PS - The "crux of the biscuit" here is that you cannot "siphon up".

That's what you are talking about - starting a siphon (you said with a vacuum) and having it continue once you put your caps on to seal the system.

A siphon can make water go up a tube - sure, but only on its way down to someplace else... Water can be siphoned from one place to another, but it goes from "point A" to "point B" - "Point A" is above "Point B". It will go until all of the water is gone from "point A". Also - You cannot siphon water within the same vessel - like starting a siphon that draws from the top of your tank and the outlet is at the bottom... that won't work either. Water siphons from vessel A to vessel B so long as vessel A is above vessel B. That's the rules. The laws of Physics aren't very forgiving.

You're not the fist person that came up with this theory.I'm sure you won't be the last either.
