Well, YBS get about the same size as RES, so if you're looking for something smaller you might want to avoid them.

Personally, I'd love to get a Diamond Back Terrapin (DBT), but they're hard to come by in BC.

Southern painteds are also neat, and males stay quite small (usually under 5").

Of course, you could always check out your local reptile shelter, and maybe a turtle will be calling your name :)

I'm not answering ur post but id also like to knwo fo what is the smallest aquatic turtle. bc my gf wants one but i dont want to get a turtle to put in with my RES bc of aggression so id rather just get a turtle where its permanent home could be around a 55 gallon tank. a 30 gallon would be even better

I would one of the map turtle on my sig. They stay relatively small, I think about 5 inches for adults and they stay very well with other turtles (in my experience). My baby Ouachita is was already eating out of my hang within 5 days of captivity. They also look very cool. :)

1 Ouachita Map Turtle 4.0'' (Hurricane)
The rest of the turtles have been adopted to good homes. :)

I got a musk turtle recently. He's tiny! Compared to my RES especially. Mine is super shy though. :(
RES: Turtley - about 9" (She makes it a mission to measure her. :/)

My Gf really wants a map turtle. and i'd be fine with it but My RES is going to be moving into a 65 gallon in May and that means ill have an empty 29. and it wont take long for a map to out grow that and id have to put them both in the 65 so the 65 would be too small and i heard maps can get aggressive and i know RES can be too.

Maps can get bigger than you are thinking. For Mississippi Maps, males are can get up to 5 inches, females up to 10 inches.

About six month ago mine was 6 1/2 inches and she is still growing. Her 62 gallon tank is starting to look small.

Lol, it actually isn't that bad. Mine has yet to release his musk, but I smelled it from one of the other hatchlings at the pet store. You have to get close to even smell it. I don't know if it gets stronger as they gets larger though. I don't think it would get so bad that it could stink up a house.
