Habitat - Indoor :: My New 55 Gallon Tank

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Thu Feb 18, 2010 4:45 am   My New 55 Gallon Tank

I'll get more pictures up soon, camera is charging. Just made the switch from a 20 Gallon Long, got the turtles last January as babies. Oh that is a turtle topper up there, got it on clearance last year for $35 at Petco.

Going to need a new filter, just have a Fluval U3, my Aqueon filter doesn't fit.

Should i get a Rena XP3 or a Fluval 404?

Oh and here's a video of one eating a minnow, they ate 11 in 5 minutes.

Looks great! Good deal on the turtle topper!

I notice you have a turtle dock in there too. Do you have UVB for both?

On the filters - both the 404/405 and XP3 are good filters. I had a 404 for a while, and I was happy with it. Many people on this forum have an XP3 and are very happy with it as well.
If it was me, I think I would lean toward the XP3, since they are generally a bit less expensive new. But it would also depend on what was available locally.

Yes it is crayola purple sand. I don't have a bulb under the turtle dock, maybe i should just remove it? I just thought maybe they would want a place to hang out.

I just bought the 405 today, and had a little accident i didnt put the rubber seal in correctly, and about 4 gallons leaked out oops, haha. But it seems to work great, should i leave the Fluval U3 in there?

That purple sand does look awesome!
On the dock - As long as they're basking mostly on the turtle topper, then it'll be OK.
On the filters - It's up to you. The extra filter will certainly help keep the tank clean. The only thing is how much room the U3 takes up. If it takes a significant amount of room, you might want to take it out for maximum swimming space.
