We just bought one of those hollowed out half logs from the petstore. Do we have to do anything to it before we put it in?

As long as it's stuff that is specifically made for aquariums, then no nothing special needs to be done. I usually just rinse the stuff off with hot water and give it a good scrub to get dust or anything else that could have settled on it.
