Well the general rule of thumb for RES's is to have a filter that is designed to filter a least 2 times the size of your tank, because they are very messy with their food and using the restroom ect.
So if you have a 50 gallon tank, I would recommend using a filter designed for filtering a 100 gallon tank.
If you only actually fill it with 35-40 gallons, then at minimum you should have a filter designed to filter an 80 gallon.
Remember, you can never have enough filtering lol.
But obviously, like all of us, pricing is always an issue.

Sounds like your tank needs a bit of time to cycle. Inadequate filtration can cause other types of problems like the ones DerekMetal mentioned.

Derek, the bare minimum is 3x per hour....So 40 gallons need 120GPH filter. And i agree that bigger is ALWAYS better, even for future upgrades.
Most likely you have a nitrate spike cause your tank is cycling and building beneficial bacteria like Steve said.Do partial water changes and it should clear up in a week or so.If not....... Get a bigger filter.
