my room has no central AC and as of late the water is getting a little to warm for my liking, around 79 degrees. would putting ice cubes in the tank be a little much, or do you think it will help

I dont think it would hurt, I know I read about someone saying to take a soda bottle and freeze it and then letting that float in the tank to keep it cooler.

Ice cubes would be alright, but depending on the size of your tank, they may not do much.
Frozen pop bottles also work. In the summer, when my tanks get too big, I freeze a 2L milk jug and they'll cool the water in my 75 and 90 gal tanks by about 1 degree.
