Habitat - Indoor :: tank cleanings

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Just out of curiosity, how often do ya'll clean your tank? How do you clean it?

I keep two females in the same tank together, so I clean it once a week. I use a filter, but it's not the most exciting one in the world. I do a complete water change too, so that there won't be any algae build up or bacteria problems. My turtles really enjoy getting fresh water, and are very active and excited when I change all the water.

I've got a 75 and 90 gallon, with a 7" and 8.5" RES respectively. Both tanks have an FX5 for a filter.
I mark down on my calendar when I cleaned the tanks last, otherwise I forget.
I usually try to do a partial water change (25-50%) every two weeks. I drain the tank using the FX5, then fill them up with a hose connected to the bathroom tap.
Then I clean the filter about every 3 months or so. I give everything a rinse (except the biomedia), and usually change the carbon.

And then, maybe once or twice a year, I do a full water change (99% of the water anyway), clean the filter, and even give the rocks a bit of a scrub. But that takes about two hours, so I don't do that often :P

I brush off algae whenever it gets bad.

I rise off my filter floss & carbon inserts every other week.

I rise my biomedia probably every month, in tank water.

I take apart my filter, and rinse out all the "stuff" that gets trapped in there every other month

I never do a 100% water change.

My main reason for the 100% water change is because for the "turtle slime" that they build up so fast. Even with the filter. It seems to bother them when a lot of turtle slime gets in the tank.
