I am sure you can, I use my hands or a fish net too stir up the sand

Yes. But that's going to move more sand than it sifts and end up being kind of annoying. I just use my sand rake I made for a quick stir when I can find it, but I mostly just use my hands since I don't have to look for them and they're always available.

also chris. u used a spatula to put the sand into the tank. im not gonna use something my parents use on our eggs.. lol. what else can i use instead?

lol. You could just use your hand and put the bucket on the top of the tank and just push the sand out of the bucket.

Or you can use any kind of scooper or whatever else to put it in. It's no biggie really.
