I just added sand as my sub and I was wondering after it settles some can you use a coffee filter on the intake basket to keep the sand from going into the filter motor?

i suppose you could, but i would be worried about the turtle tearing chunks off. i know they make prefilters that you can get from petstores

No that wouldn't work too well. I tested coffee filters in water a while ago when I was thinking they would make a good micron filter, and when I put them in water and they soaked for a few minutes, they tore very easily. I'd be worried it'd tear then get sucked into the intake and lodge somewhere in your motor.

I just added sand and it's almost clear but every time they run across the bottom another cloud of blown comes up and it takes some while to filter. I see the sand pebbles fall but this cloud remains. I rinsed the sand A LOT before putting it in and it wasn't too bad at first. What should I do to the sand, stir it up a few times and filter it?

Hm thats a lot of dust. How long did you wash for? I'd say you should probably take it all out and rinse again for a while.

if there is still dust left over you didn't rinse it long enough.
