So if the worst-case scenario is I get a 12" female RES, how wide do I make the ramp to her basking area? What's a good safe number? Including legs for comfortable walking...
I'm making an ATBA and I really don't wanna make it twice.

While, I'm here, I may as well ask... what's a good incline for the ramp? I'm thinking 30 degrees?
Still working on the tank's filter, so I won't start this for a while, but it wouldn't hurt to have it in mind now.

I've got a 8.5" female, and her ramp is about 9" wide. She can climb up it comfortably, but there's not a lot of extra room (she can't turn around on it or anything). What size of tank do you have? That could play a roll in how wide you want to do your ramp too. If you have a 18" wide tank, you could do a ramp as wide as the tank, or a few inches short of the width of the tank.

Or, you could do it the length of the turtle (say, 12"). I think that would be sufficient.

Also, don't forget, 12" is usually the high end of the scale for RES. I think a good average might be 10" (although it is dependent on many factors).

For incline, 30 sounds about good. I just eyeballed mine. It is the angle that was created when I stacked up 3 textbooks. You don't want it too steep of course, but you don't want it taking up half the tank either.

If you're building an ATBA, you could go the safe route and make the ramp as wide as the tank. That way you're covered in all situations.

Where are you getting your turtle from?

I've already got 3 sliders, about 2-3".
Can't sex them yet, but I want to be prepared.

The problem is I can't just use the entire width of the tank, I need at least part of it for another thing I'm building. I'm trying to figure out just how much space I should leave for the ATBA ramp.

Anyway, thanks guys. I may just make it 10-11" which leaves me plenty of space.
