How do you get small pieces of debris (plant leaves,waste, etc) off of the sand substrate without pulling the sand out?

Or is something the filter should get?

I covered this in the sand faq, but I use the zoo med sand scooper. The link is in the sand faq. It works good for me

I use a regular green fish net, scoop up some sand and shake it out in the water. The sand goes through the net and the crud is caught in it. If you do this method, shake it at the surface so the sand and crud can't float out while you're agitating it.

i do the same but i just pull it back and foward non stop through the sand and the movement forces the sand out the other end

oh that's good, i have one of those & that way i don't have to buy a sand sifter
