Habitat - Indoor :: Tank size for two

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I know of the tank size requirements for 1 turtle 10 gallons per inch of shell length....But I was curious how that relates to multiple turtles...

Also what is this size based on....Swimming space?? waste produced?? filtration??

I think the rule of thumb is based on "Personal space". Both turtles need their own space to go where they can be out of sight of the other.

As for the requirements, I've heard it relaxed to 10 gal/in for the first turtle, then an additional 5 gal/in for the second.

So two 10" turtles would require a (10"*10gal + 10"*5gal) = 150 gallons.

But really, it all depends on the turtle. If you've got a particularly aggressive male, the largest tank isn't going to stop him from harassing the other turtles.

Bulldog is right 100%. The 10 gallons per inch plus 5 gallons per inch is the accepted measurement for multiple turtles. But, you should get the biggest tank you can afford. The more room the better, especially if you have to divide it one day.

He said 20 gallons per EACH TURTLE not each inch of extra turtle. 20 gallons per each extra turtles isn't enough. It would be for a hatchling but not for a full grown female.
