Hey, ive got a 40g tank, with way to wimpy of a filter, so im looking to upgrade. i was looking at a fluval 4plus today and a fluval 305. is the 4pus enough for my tank, or should i go with the 305? thanks

A canister filter is always better than an internal. If you are limiting yourself to the Fluvals then get the 305.

But I would recommend taking a look at something like a Rena Filstar XP1,XP2,or XP3. Probably the XP3 since it will handle a larger tank, say a 75 gallon, when you upgrade in the future.

I have an XP1 in my 55 Gal and it does a fantastic job.

Either way you ideally want a filter that exchanges the water in your tank 5X per hour or more.

I've had a bad experience with the Fluval 304 and I wouldn't recommend that or the similar 305 model. An XP2 or even a hang-on-tank filter will be better.

Size you filter pump to 5 times the water volume. gph. When checking them out a 300 to 350 gph would do just fine. Canisters are easier to clean and maintain.
