guys what should be the right type of filter for a 40 gal (approx.) tank? where i am the common filters for aquariums are the power filters but they take up a lot of aquarium space n the cables n tubes r very messy. are there H.O.T.s which i can use? can anyone recommend me any other filter that's not too costly (i'm still a student)?

HOT's work if you can arrange for the water level to be high enough, but be very careful that the turtle can't escape. It's suprising how well they can climb! Some people also find the constant sound of water splashing to be annoying. The very best option is a canister filter, they have room for lots of filter media and they do a great job of circulating the water. When i had a 40 gal tank, i used a Fluval 305, and it worked great. A Filstar XP2 would probably be good too, i love the XP3 i have on my 75 gal now. If you can afford to wait a bit, you can sometimes find great sales on canister filters if you keep looking. If you really can't afford one, Aquaclear makes hang-on filters that work great and are fairly inexpensive. Here's a good tip from one poor student to another: at petsmart, if you're planning on buying anything thats kind of expensive, before you go to the store, go to their website and print out the page for what you want to buy. Frequently they sell things online for significantly less than they do at the store. If you give the cashier the printout, they will match the online price, and you'll save a bit of $$.
