I finished builting my basking area for Boog.

My question is that is it usual for a turtle to just explore it, like going up to the basking area and then quickly get out of there?

Yes, that's normal. Now you know it's easily accessible for him. He'll use it when he's ready. Mine took 2 weeks to get used to their new basking area last time I changed it.

I'd be worried that the screen is too harsh on the shell and skin of your turtle.

If the screen is plastic, I don't think there would be a problem... Of course, I could be thinking of something different that what you have. The only thick of is that it might just the right size for her nails to get caught in, but females have much shorter nails...

I think you'll want something on it, since the holes on the plastic look pretty big. If you're going to switch it out, you could try the cupboard non-slip stuff, or those plastic cross-stitch boards
