Looking for the best way to evenly heat my 40gal acrylic tank. So my question is this, one heater positioned in the middle that is adequate to heat the tank by itself, or two heaters on one on each end of the tank. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks! Almost forgot, I only have one RES in the tank.

I think it'd be best achieved by two heaters, one on each end. I personally have a 40 gallon breeder tank with one heater set on one side. My thought is that he can self-regulate better by choosing if he wants to be on the warmer side with the heater or the cooler side without. I also have my heater under my basking area to discourage him from perching on it.

1 heater would be sufficient for a 40 gallon, as long as you get a heater big enough for the tank. 40 gallons is not that big. that also will give your turtle a slight temperature gradient to move around in.

if your lookin to evenly heat the tank, stick a submersible heater and stick it under the intake tube of your filter.

I have tried both 1 and 2 heaters at each end, and I have found both work well, as long as you have the proper wattage for the amount of water heated.

Thanks for the replies! I had not thought about it like that before, the non heater side of the tank being a little cooler & letting him self regulate his temp like that. I just notice he sleeps pretty close to the heater. Thanks again every1!

d-bill -- If you filter is working properly and pumping the tank should be the same temp. One 100 watt should do fine. Your water temp should be around 76 to 77 degrees and your basking should be about 90 to 91 degrees. You should have a filter pump that pumps 5 times or more the water volume you have in the tank. For that size tank a 300 or 350 gph should do fine. b.

Just make sure you have a heater that is rated for the size tank you have. Don't worry about having 2 heaters unless your tank is so insanely large (over 100 gallon).

I have a 90-gallon tank, filled with about 65 gallons of water, and I only have one very large Visitherm stealth heater positioned in the middle of the tank. The temp stays fairly constant throughout. :)

industrial_girl_2000, just curious what kind of filter set up do you use in your 90gal tank? Thanks again everyone!

If a tank is around 48 inches long, people often use two heaters, one at each end, with each heater being half the total wattage needed to heat the tank. If you're using one heater, placing it near the output is good so the heat is circulated more evenly.
