Habitat - Indoor :: Is your RES a shy basker?

Hey Guys and Gals,
I reported some time ago that ever since I built Hurley his ATB that he wasn't basking. I covered his area and he finally went on his own. ( http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14547 )
Shortly there after, he went above and let me photograph him

I thought he was cool, shortly after he went back to jumping off his platform whenever we made sudden movements in the room. I liked "N4784N R4613's" idea with the one sided mirror and had an idea. I used some Glad Press and Seal and covered half of his plexi so that his basking area is private but I could still see in of needed. It static clings right to the plexi without a problem and is easily removed if needed. A roll of it cost about 3 bucks at K-mart and it gives the plexi a frosted look.




As you can see, success. So far so good, he basks and we don't have to tip toe around the living room (in the beginning, I was crawling in and out of the room so I didn't disturb him... seriously)

So, if you have a jumper, perhaps a little Glad Press and Seal may save the day.

Thats a neat Idea. My turt isn't that shy of a basker. But most turt's are, they feel vulnerable when they are out of the water.

He wasnt shy until I built the Above Tank Basking platform. When he had his turtle dock, we could dance in front of his and he would look at us like... Whatever.

Thanks. It's working great. He even lets me approach as long as I announce myself as I come closer.

Lol great idea for shy baskers! It's usually when you suddenly come into their view that startles them most.

My two little babies really love basking. In fact, thats the thing they do the most. They don't get uneasy when I go up to them and have a big black shiny camera in their faces, lol.


and I know what you mean about the crawling around and announcing your arrival, I used to do that when my turtles first began basking

Leo is usually ok with me coming up to him while he's basking. For some reason he just doesn't like the look of my camera. Whenever he sees it he's gone.

Mine are pretty shy too, but the press n seal keeps them on the dock. Thanks for the great idea!

The press n seal I have has 'press 'n seal' written all over it so it looked a little silly. I switched to using parchment paper, which gives the same look and desired effect, but you need to tape it to the tank.

cool. For the last few weeks I've had the press and seal off. Hurley is cool with us now. He's actually basking right now as my wife if Playing Wii Sports (so he's gotten used to movements). He still jumps off if someone enters the room really fast but that because its coming from behind him.

i like it but i dnt want to avoid seeing them basking. even though that is pretty good the people at my local k mart will just say "nope we have chia pets try that". doesnt seem to be on topic so i try looking else ware and ive used supermarket grocery bags but that just make the turtle less motivated to swim and just sleeps on bottom of the tank. and plus they like watching tv in my room but if i frost that they might change. they stopped trying to bite me after watching more tv but they must seem to relax more watching tv and all

its nice to know mine is the only turtle jumping off his basking perch when i walk into the room, for the longest time i thought he wasn't even basking, but then i caught him sliding off a couple times
