Habitat - Indoor :: 40 gal tank FREE

Well, someone i work with gave me a free 40 gal and i'm looking for a stand. the tank is 36Lx20Hx12W. i haven't been able to find any stand for it anywhere and the only other place i can put it is on the ground. any ideas where i can get one

Congrats on the good scoop!
For a 40 gal, if you have a sturdy coffee table that would work well (if you and someone else can sit on it, it'll be strong enough).
Other than that, many pet stores sell aquarium stands, but they could be expensive.
And there's always the good ol' cinderblock and plywood solution.
Since it's 12x38 footprint, you could get away with one 8x8x16 cinderblock on each side, and stack it two, maybe 3 blocks high, and put a piece of scrap plywood on the top. You can also put a piece under the blocks, so weight is distributed evenly, and so the blocks don't leave an impression on the floor.
Finally, under the tank, you might want to put something like a thin piece of styrofoam or cardbord, just in case your stand isn't even

hmm interesting, but ghetto i might just put it on a desk... its gonna weigh almost 500 lbs right?

According the the tank calculator on this site (http://www.redearslider.com/calculator.html)
It'll weigh about 300lbs.
If a couple adults can safely sit on the desk, it'll be alright.

And blocks SO aren't ghetto! I was supprised how good they actually look, since I just got a new tank and can't build a stand til the spring. But you're right, once I build a stand, it'll look better, and I'll have a new space to throw all the turtle junk!

lol i've though about building my own. just a basic window frame style bottom to distribute weight and the same style on top, then four legs between. with some heavy set brackets for sway support... but i dont have the resources for that at the momen

Check on the free listing sites like Craigslist for cheap furniture. It might not be exactly meant for an aquarium, but it's cheap (or free). Our aquarium is going on my husband's desk because it's the only place we can put it!

you can try Meijer too... aquarium stands are murder in price unless you get a cheep metal one... and most of the metal ones arnt good enough to hold a full one of water...

Meijer though carries alot of cheeper wood stands that are nice in stock... i found a couple great ones, one for my 40 long tank ,
black wood with hood lights and covers to match two door cabinet underneath 100 bucks everyone else wanted way more for the same thing...

and a 29 gallon one with doors hood lights the works for 55 bucks...

If you do the blocks / wood thing you can always drape a piece of cloth over the "stand" kinda like a skirt...then you have a hiding spot for equipment too.
