I have read where the uv cannot penetrate glass; can someone tell me if the rays can penetrate the plexiglass that is in my aquarium hood so the res can get the benefit intended? Thanks.

In a word NO- It will not penetrate it and it will slowly damage the plexiglass just like the uv rays from the sun. You will have to engineer around the plexiglass some how.

The plexiglass in the aquarium hood can be removed. Basically all of the UV rays would be filtered by the plexiglass so your RES will not benefit.

You need to take the plexiglass off. Any barrier---glass, plexiglass, screens---will filter out UVB rays.
