Habitat - Indoor :: 125 Gallon Tank Questions/Suggestions

Ok, since it's the Christmas season I'm going to pick up some items needed for a 125 Gallon Tank. I won't be able to purchase a tank until May due to my current living arrangements but I want to get a head start on the other things.

Filter?
I was thinking about running 2 filters on each side of the tank. I have never used an external filter so I'm not sure which route to go.

Basking Area?
I really want an above tank basking area so my turtle can have the whole tank to swim. My problem is I am absolutely terrible when it comes to craftsmanship.

Where to find a decently cheap 125 gallon tank?

Open to all suggestions.

Since you have the time- I'd look around on craigslist.com for the tank- you can probably get a good deal on there.

I have a 125 gallon and we use two XP3's, one on each end. Then we have three bubble stones throughout to help with circulation.

As far as the above tank basking area goes, we are going to venture into that once we get a house in July.

I think craigslist would be the best place to find a cheap one... If you wait long enough, something should come up. I got mine at a family owned pet store.

I would also look on ebay. I've seen some pretty good deals on there. Also, check the sale bin at the Petco. I always seem to find reptile stuff on clearance for cheap.

Filters - I'd say get two XP3s

Basking area - if none of the commercial ones fit your taste, get corkbark. Wedge them in place or attach suctions cups to keep them from floating away from you basking/heat lamps

You might also need to get one or two 300watt water heaters (depending on the average room temp)

and if you don't already have one - you need a siphon to help drain/fill that huge tank. Python is a popular brand.

Gab 26 -- I am getting a 125 this next summer and I am getting s Fluval FX5 which will turn/exchange the water more that 6 times per hour. I think that would be an excellent filter/pump for your tank. I would suggest two heaters at about 200 watts each.

The above tank basking will be hard to get from a store. I have seen lots of pics and details on ones people have made, but you might want to ask your friends or family if they have any wood skill, When i return home this x-mas I'm going to build an above tank area and it actually isn't that hard or expense... a 4x8 sheet 1/2 thick (hardwood) is about 35 at home depot. I am build a box with a lip at the bottom and putting plexi for the bottom, The plexi was 8.57 plus tax, soo... all in all about 45 dollars for whats going to be an awesome basking area what will still give light to the aquarium and not be toxic and not rot.

You want about 4w per a gallon so maybe two 250w heaters.
